Schoolwide Celebration of Reading Month
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. - Dr. Seuss
Reading is a fundamental literacy skill that every human being should have. It will take us everywhere and will make us learn something new. Literature allows us to take a break from reality and feel the fantasy world. That's why reading is important and fun at the same time.
The English and Filipino Departments in collaboration with the Learning Resource Center celebrated Reading Month on December 1 and 5, 2022. After two years of pandemic, the SPAS community has finally got to interact and bond with one another. With the face-to-face classes now implemented, the students have showcased their creativity and talents in appreciating the different literary works in the Philippines and around the world.
Each grade level was assigned to perform an English and Filipino literary works. The Grade 1 pupils amazed the audience with their poetry recitations of the pieces, "Fly, Fly, the Butterfly” and "Kahilingan ng mga Munti." This was followed by the Grade 2 pupils who showed their talents through their graceful song and dance performance of the "Community Song". Next were the Grade 3 pupils who were all dressed up with their favorite book characters and recited their individual monologues.
The Grade 4 pupils performed a choral reading of “The Giving Tree" and "Ang Mapagbigay na Puno". Afterwards, the Grade 5 impressed the audience with how they pronounced words with feelings in their poetry recitation of “The Early Owl" and "Ang Tunay na Yaman". And last but not the least, the Grade 6 entertained the audience with their talents in acting and storytelling with the pieces, "The Paradise of Animals" and "Ang Sampung Magkakaibigan". The pupils’ performances showed their different capabilities. We can proudly say that they are truly Peterians!
Moreover, the junior high school students presented their talents as well. Grade 7 depicted their nationalism and patriotism with their poem interpretations of "1896" and "Kung Tuyo na Ang Luha Mo, Aking Bayan". Then, the Grade 8 students displayed their reading prowess through a reader's theater of "The Lord of the Cranes" and "Juan Pusong". They were then followed by Grade 9 who delved into their creativity and acting skills by performing a one-act-play of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Florante at Laura". Since mythology stories are the very foundation and inspiration of literature, and they have to be well known, the Grade 10 students portrayed different gods and goddesses in both Philippine and Greek mythology while performing a character monologue.
Furthermore, the senior high school students had a different approach to celebrating reading month with their performances. Grade 11 students serenaded the entire Peterian community with a medley of OPM songs translated into English and Filipino while the Grade 12 students presented their appreciation and understanding of the famous Philippine short stories through a review vlog.
Since we celebrated our love for reading, the teachers and administrators did not let themselves be left behind during the celebration. They dressed up as their favorite book characters, and the host departments chose three teachers who stood out among others with their best costumes. Peterians exhibited admiration, fondness, respect, and appreciation for the literary works of the Philippines and the world. With the core values of wisdom, benevolence, courage, and faith, which they have carried into their performances, they have also carried out the importance and wonder of reading.
It was indeed a magical milestone for Peterians as we transition to full face-to-face classes at the time of the pandemic!
